Natural dyeing is an ancient craft which is both interesting and fun. Anyone with a little knowledge, some basic equipment, dyestuffs and mordants can have a go.

Here at Wheeldale Woolcrafts we use vegetation from the locality of the North Yorkshire Moors to dye our handspun yarns. To achieve brighter colours especially reds and blues we use imported natural dyes. To fix the dyes we also stock a wide range of mordant dyestuffs for cleaned white fleeces and yarns. Workshops focusing on natural dyeing are available on request.

We are happy to supply the following mordants; alum, iron, copper and chrome.

Our range of Natural Dyestuffs includes:

Sanderswood (pinky orange) 100g

Madder Root powder (red, use at 50%) 100g

Logwood (purple) 100g

Henna Powder (yellow) 100g

Alkanet (mauve) 100g
